When Pain Shapes Who We Become
This piece reflects the enduring power of memories, absence, and the intangible experiences that become who we are. It questions the notion that “time heals all wounds,” but somehow we keep some injuries and memories while having them shape a new way to exist. Through musings about separation, grief, hardship, striving, and anticipation of better days, this piece considers how sorrow enhances the human spirit and our definition of “living.”
It appeals to a generation in our society who comes into manhood or womanhood while coping with political, economic, social, and individual issues, still holding dreams for peace, love, and justice.
It argues that while we may or may not end suffering, when suffering occurs, an individual may gain the courage and wisdom that develop with love, compassion, and the ability to start over. It’s about holding onto the past without becoming stuck.
